Day 1 - Morning Report

Good morning and welcome to the 2014 Vans US Open of Surfing.  Remember to check back with us every morning for a rundown of the craziest heats, the athletes to watch, and the best of the day’s events.

True to form, day one of the event has begun under a thick blanket of coastal fog.  The weather forecast, however, promises afternoon heat and pristine California sunshine.  Surf competition begins today with the Men’s Pro Junior.  Prepare to see some of the world’s best young talent ripping in the first two rounds of action.

Hawaiian sensation Kalani David will take the water in Heat 2.  Local surf prodigy Kanoa Igarashi will try to impress his hometown fans in Heat 4.  A young surfer in Heat 8 may look familiar to members of the surfing community—13 year old wild card entrant Noah Beschen, son of surfing legend Shane Beschen, will attempt to replicate some of his father’s famous progressive maneuvers.  Another young man who will hope for a copycat performance during today’s heats is 18 year old Parker Coffin, whose older brother Connor was crowned the champion of this event 12 months ago. Parker will surf in Heat 15.
