Sustainability

The 2015 Vans US Open is a Deep Blue Surfing Event, which is a more “Ocean Friendly” event that sets a clear path for reducing the environmental impacts of a professional surfing contest, while also providing social benefits for the local community. Deep Blue Surfing Events is a program by non-profit, Sustainable Surf.

The Deep Blue Surf designation means that the Vans US Open will strive to reduce waste, use renewable energy, support local nonprofits, encourage and facilitate the use of alternative transportation and measure and offset the carbon footprint of the event. As part of our sustainability commitment, we will publish a transparent report that shows the data and stories around the sustainable actions associated with the event

These actions protect the environment in Huntington Beach and support the local community and economy. They also reduce direct threats to the sport of surfing itself, by minimizing the event’s contribution to marine plastic pollution, sea level rise, and ocean acidification.

In 2014, the Vans US Open made significant progress towards reducing the environmental footprint of the event and supporting the community- click here for the full report. In 2015, we intend to improve on this year’s performance from the lessons learned in 2014.

Waste Diversion and Composting

In partnership with Rainbow, the local waste management service provider, we are working to minimize the amount of event waste sent to the landfill. Containers for recycling and landfill waste will be placed throughout the event. Areas with a high level of food waste like the Van Doren Village grilling area will also have bins for compostable waste. Sponsors will be asked to use compostable service ware in order to minimize waste to landfill.

Biodiesel Powers the Event

The generators that power the event and webcast will be running on biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel is renewable and reduces greenhouse gas emission by more than 75% compared with conventional diesel.

The US Open has been supporting the Life Rolls On Foundation for the past 10 years.

Community Support

For the past ten years, the US Open has supported the Life Rolls On Foundation, and held an exhibition of adaptive surfing during the contest. Pro surfers take kids with spinal injuries into the waves and share the stoke and excitement of surfing.

We also work with Global Inheritance, to set up an educational booth in the main event area. This booth teaches event-goers about sustainability in a fun way and emphasizes recycling with unusually decorated recycling bins.

Reducing Climate Change

Some impacts, like the carbon footprint of air travel for athletes, are impossible to reduce – so we support projects that mitigate the effects of these carbon emissions. These projects reduce emissions that contribute to climate change and therefore protect coral reefs and beaches from the effects of ocean acidification and sea level rise.

Transportation

Public transportation is a viable option that eliminates parking hassles, and reduces the environmental impact of the event. Stay tuned for bus routes and times.

If you do drive to the event, save money and help reduce the environmental impact of the event by carpooling.
